Aspen Open: Feb 20-23
Freeriderz were represented by Eli Mayer, Brayden Tritter, Colin Bridger, Matt Coulliard, Mark Hendrickson, and Austin Coll. Cam Duncan came down but didn't compete (hip injury). Most flew in to Denver, except Mark and coach Brent who were supposed to fly direct to Aspen, but wound up stuck in denver due to 100 mph cross winds. They got to make the bus trip out at midnight during a blizzard.
The boys skied Snowmass on Monday and started the first of two days training on Tuesday at Buttermilk, home of the X games. Of course there was great weather on training days, but the day of the heats was cold with ferocious gusting cross/head winds. This added an extra challenge to the athletes. Aspen is a great skiing town, but very expensive. We looked but didn't recognize any famous celebrities. There were some buildings near the ski hill bases which looked like lodges at first, but turned out to be single residences. $$$$
On Thursday we were collected in the lodge at Buttermilk watching the heats while the Canada/USA women's hockey final was on the TV. The bar played music, but when we all cheered the tieing goal, the bartender turned on the game volume, thinking the crowd had cheered for USA. Disappointed to see that it was Canada, he promptly turned off the sound.
All in all the boys had a great experience at this top level comp!
